One Money Design

A few years ago I was laid off from my job.  For many people this can be one of the most stressful situations in life, especially if you’re the primary provider of income for your family.  I knew at that moment I had two choices:  1.) Stand strong in my faith and trust that all of our family’s needs would be provided for, or 2.) Lose myself in worrying about money, stress and fear. 

I knew the second option would be a painful experience for my family and me.  The result of going in that direction might have brought me to a point of stagnation and depression.  I wouldn’t have been in a good state for job interviews and I imagine my negative emotions would have been written all over my face.

I knew the first option, if I could stand strong against number 2, would be a better journey.  I could one day look back upon the experience and be thankful for the opportunity to grow myself in my faith, be strong for my family and proud of my behavior.

Job losses are more frequent in today’s economy than two years ago.  But what is more frequent is the uncertainty many people have about their money each day.  Where will I get the money to pay this month’s electric bill?   Will I ever get out of debt?  I don’t have any money in savings; what if I lose my job?  These are all common questions.

A recent Crown Financial Ministries daily devotion addresses these questions well.

Worrying over investments, savings, money, or assets can cause financial bondage and may interfere with our lives. Then worry can spill over into other areas of life. If we are worrying, we are not trusting.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7 NASB).

The great thing about Biblical finance (Christian finance) is that we never have to manage our finances alone when we trust God.  When we open the door, make our requests known to Him, he answers.  Of course He may not answer in the way we expect, or desire, but He is faithful in His answer. 

For me, knowing that I needed to find a new job to support my family, the route of faith proved to be a peaceful one.  Sure, I did my part by working hard to network and search for a job, but the weights and burdens of stress, worry and fear were lifted off of my shoulders because I let God carry them for me.  It’s nice to look back and have positive thoughts about such an experience.

Do your part in managing your money wisely, but let your requests be known to God and trust in Him to lift your burdens.
